Freedom of the seas
Yesterday we attended the AGM of the Shipping Offshore Network, followed by the seminar "Freedom of the Seas" where Iver B.Neumann (PhD, Director, Fridtjof Nansen Institute), Ulf Sverdrup (PhD, Professor BI Norwegian Business School, Director NUPI 2011–2023), Sverre Diesen (MSc, Researcher, General (R), Norwegian Defence Research Establishment, Former Chief of Defence of Norway) and Svein Ringbakken (MSc Law, Director/CEO, The Norwegian Shipowners' Mutual War Risks Insurance Association), presented the changing geopolitical and political landscape, wars and conflicts.
As they all pointed out, global maritime trade is essential for economic growth and to maintain global peace. In a changing geopolitical landscape establishing a new world’ order where the western values and organizations are not embraced by all countries, it is of outmost importance to have seminars like these were people from different companies, politicians and bureaucrats can meet and discuss and try to understand what is happening and what to look for when evaluating ongoing strategies and day-to-day decisions.
The following Q&A and panel debate, moderated by Tom Kleppestø, General Manger of Shipping Offshore Network also highlighted the implications of the shadow fleet and Europes role in ongoing events.
The maritime DNA is to look for such threats and opportunities, do the risk analysis and as quickly as possible change and adapt. Maritime Optima was invited to show how conflicts and unforeseen activities have influenced the main sea routes within different shipping segments. As we have spent the last 5 years building a high-quality data pipeline and a sea route engine, we are excited to start showing the value of our investment, where we can analyze the past, get real-time notificationz when something happens, and use machine learning and AI to give a better understanding of the future.
We have attached an example of our visualizations below, where you can see how LNG vessels change their sea routes during the marked events. The graphs show vessels larger than 10 000 dwt, and start from the 1st of January 2022 and end on the 26th of February 2024.
