Simen holds a B.S.E. in Mechanical Engineering from Duke University and a Master of Science in Industrial Economics and Technology Management from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). His master’s thesis investigated a tramp ship routing and scheduling problem with bunker optimization and fleet repositioning, based on real data from Maritime Optima and Western Bulk. His work developed novel approaches for optimally matching fleets of vessels with cargoes using heuristic search algorithms.
Before joining Maritime Optima full-time in 2023, Simen interned at Maritime Optima, Pareto Securities, and Innovation Norway. He also has a year of experience at Wilhelmsen, where he implemented a sensor data pipeline for vessels in the Wallenius Wilhelmsen fleet.
At Maritime Optima, Simen has implemented large parts of the data processing pipeline on Databricks and contributed to building the extensive polygon dataset that underpins the platform’s geospatial analytics.
In his spare time, Simen enjoys hiking, traveling, and occasionally playing the piano.
