The Maltese-flagged container ship CMA CGM San Antonio (2,824 TEU) was struck by missiles while transiting the Strait of Hormuz on May 5, resulting in crew injuries and damage to the vessel. CMA CGM confirmed the attack on May 6, stating that injured crew members had been evacuated and were receiving medical care. The number of casualties has not been publicly disclosed.
CMA CGM San Antonio was bound for Mundra, India at the time of the attack, having been among 14 CMA CGM vessels stranded in the Persian Gulf when the conflict began in February. AIS data from ShipAtlas shows the vessel ceased transmitting on the same day of the attack, which could reflect a deliberate transponder switch-off ahead of the transit attempt.
The strike is the second confirmed attack on a CMA CGM vessel in the strait since the outbreak of hostilities. The container ship CMA CGM Everglade was attacked on April 18 without casualties. The French government stated that France was not specifically targeted in the latest attack.
No pollution has been reported. The vessel's current position and condition have not been fully confirmed.
Investigation is ongoing. No group has claimed responsibility.
