Car Carrier CMA CGM Monza Strikes Pier at Bremerhaven, Hull Breached Above Waterline

The 2024-built car carrier CMA CGM Monza sustained an approximately 2,5 meter hull breach on her starboard side after making contact with a pier at the site of a decommissioned swing bridge in Bremerhaven harbour at approximately 0230 GMT on Tuesday during departure from Kaiserhafen Zwei.

The vessel had requested an additional tug assist prior to departure due to windy and gusty conditions. Despite the supplementary tug support, strong winds pushed the ship's starboard side into the edge of the pier as she transited a narrow section of the harbour channel at the former bridge location. All damage was confirmed above the waterline. No pollution or crew injuries were reported.

Bremen water police imposed a sailing ban on CMA CGM Monza following the incident and initiated administrative proceedings against the vessel's master. As of Sunday evening, the vessel remained in Bremerhaven's inner harbour.

CMA CGM Monza is a ro/ro car carrier delivered in 2024. The harbour channel at the decommissioned bridge site offers limited clearance for vessels of her size.

Investigation is ongoing under Bremen water police direction.
