The Panama-flagged cargo vessel HMM Namu, operated by a South Korean shipping company, caught fire following an explosion on the port side of the engine room while at anchor off the port limits of Umm Al Quwain, UAE, at approximately 2040 local time on May 4. All 24 crew members were confirmed safe.
The crew comprises six South Korean nationals and 18 foreign nationals. No injuries were reported. South Korea's foreign ministry confirmed the vessel would be towed to a nearby port for inspection and repairs.
The cause of the explosion has not been officially confirmed. U.S. President Trump stated that Iran had "taken shots" at the South Korean vessel and called on Seoul to join the U.S.-led Project Freedom naval operation. South Korean authorities have not publicly attributed the explosion to an external attack.
The incident occurred on the same day that the ADNOC-affiliated tanker MV Barakah was struck by two Iranian drones in the Strait of Hormuz, marking a further escalation of maritime incidents in UAE waters.
Investigation into the cause of the explosion is ongoing. No pollution was reported.
