Tanker YM Jupiter Drifts Near Alonissos After Engine Failure, Captain Sanctioned for Delayed Reporting

The tanker YM Jupiter, carrying 17 Turkish crew and 5,000 metric tons of petroleum products, drifted near Alonissos, Greece, on June 28 following an engine failure northeast of the islet of Psathoura. The vessel was en route from Eleusis at the time.

In the screenshot below you can see where the vessel lost power and started drifting ("1.") and where she was towed to safety ("2.").

The Greek-flagged salvage vessel Aigaion Pelagos established a towing connection and safely pulled the tanker away from the area. The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) of the Greek Coast Guard issued a notification to mariners following the incident.

Port authorities imposed an administrative sanction on the vessel's captain for failing to immediately report the damage as required under Greek maritime regulations. YM Jupiter was subsequently towed to a Turkish port.

No injuries or pollution were reported.
