Liberian Bulker Ocean Bright Detained in Newcastle, Banned from Australian Ports Over Unpaid Wages

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has detained the Liberian-flagged bulk carrier Ocean Bright at Newcastle and imposed a six-month ban on Australian ports, after eight crew members were found to be owed US$46,334 in unpaid wages spanning two months.

AMSA inspectors identified 18 deficiencies aboard the vessel, four of which were detainable. The ship was permitted to depart following rectification but is barred from Australian waters until September 4, 2026.

"Seafarers keep global trade moving, and they have a right to be paid for their work in line with the Maritime Labour Convention," said Greg Witherall, AMSA Acting Executive Director Operations. "AMSA will always act decisively when seafarer welfare is confirmed at risk."

The action was brought under the Maritime Labour Convention, which sets minimum standards for seafarer pay and working conditions.
