Crew Member Falls Overboard from Norwegian Breakaway off Cape Cod, Search Suspended

A galley crew member fell overboard from the cruise ship Norwegian Breakaway late on April 25 while the vessel was approximately 12 miles east of Wellfleet, Massachusetts, returning from a seven-night Bermuda voyage to Boston. The crew member has not been found.

The incident was captured on security footage. A ship-wide man-overboard alert was issued immediately and lifeboats were launched. The U.S. Coast Guard deployed helicopters from Sector Southeastern New England and Station Provincetown to assist in the search.

The search was suspended just after noon on April 26 with no sign of the crew member. Water temperatures in the area were recorded at 45–50°F — conditions in which survival time is measured in minutes.

Norwegian Breakaway is a 3,900-passenger cruise ship operated by Norwegian Cruise Line. The vessel was approximately 12 nautical miles east of Wellfleet at the time of the incident.

The crew member's identity has not been released. The cause of the incident is under investigation by U.S. Coast Guard and Norwegian Cruise Line.
