Canadian authorities have launched an investigation after the general cargo vessel BBC Tokyo struck a bridge while transiting the Welland Canal in Port Colborne, Ontario.
The incident occurred on April 16, when the vessel made contact with the Clarence Street Bridge (Bridge 21) while heading downbound. According to local reports, the ship struck the east-side tower of the bridge around midday.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has deployed investigators to assess the circumstances surrounding the incident.
As a precaution, authorities closed the bridge for several hours. Initial inspections found no major structural damage, and the bridge was reopened approximately 10 hours later. No injuries or environmental impact were reported.
Images from the scene indicate the vessel sustained scraping damage along its starboard side.
Operated by Briese Heavylift, the 149-meter multipurpose vessel is designed for transporting heavy and specialized cargo, including wind turbine components, through confined waterways like the Welland Canal.
The canal remains a critical shipping route within the St. Lawrence Seaway, handling around 3,000 vessel transits annually.
Authorities will now examine navigation, vessel handling, and operational conditions leading up to the allision.
