The vessel had departed PSA Tanjong Pagar Terminal at Singapore Port (LOCODE: SGSIN), at around 2000 hours local time and headed southeast toward the traffic separation lanes. At approximately 2200 hours, Golden Star 1 began taking on water and sank rapidly, according to Maritime Executive.
AIS data provided by ShipAtlas shows her course becoming erratic at 22:28, drifting westward before disappearing from AIS at approximately 22:50.

Indonesia's coast guard, Bakamla, recovered all nine crew members from the water off the coast of Batam and brought them safely ashore.
The response operation is ongoing. Bakamla has multiple vessels on scene and is leading efforts to monitor and manage the hazard posed by floating containers from the approximately 100 containers the vessel had on board at the time of sinking.

Golden Star 1 was a 1995-built vessel flagged in Tanzania, a flag listed as "very high risk" on the Paris MOU black list. Her most recent port state control inspection, carried out in 2022, recorded corrosion issues on her decks.
