Three vessels (the chemical and oil products tanker Xanthia and the bulk carriers Bergfjord and Hav Frakt) collided in the Valderhaugfjorden off Alesund, Norway, in the early hours of October 4 following a mayday call received by the Main Rescue Coordination Centre at 0137 local time. No injuries were reported across any of the three crews.
Two of the vessels were sailing northbound and the third southbound, with reportedly poor visibility at sea at the time of the collision. One vessel sustained water ingress following the incident. Two vessels proceeded to berth in Alesund under their own power, while the third anchored in the fjord (It is now at port).
Rescue efforts was launched and the three vessels are under Norwegian or Scandinavian management and had between seven and 16 people on board each.
According to images from the harbor, Bergfjord arrived at the quayside in Alesund with significant damage to its bow. Inspectors from the Norwegian Maritime Authority boarded the two berthed vessels on Sunday afternoon. All three vessels were ordered to remain in Alesund until inspections were completed.
The cause of the collision is under investigation by police and maritime authorities.
