Maritime Terms, Abbreviations and Acronyms

Maritime abbreviations and acronyms go back to those days we used telegram and telex to communicate. The business model for telex and telegrams was “pay per letter”. Even though the telegrams and telexes have been retired, we still use the maritime abbreviations daily.

Below you will find a comprehensive list of terms, abbreviations, and acronyms used in the maritime industry, sorted in alphabetical order. You can search for an acronym or write a word and find the abbreviations where the word is included.

If you think some abbreviations are missing, send us an e-mail at post@maritimeoptima.com or open the chat icon on the bottom of this page.

Rubber

Synthetic rubber, as opposed to natural rubber (obtained from the exudations of certain tropical trees), is derived from petroleum and natural gas. Because of its elasticity, resilience, and toughness, rubber is the basic constituent of the tires used in automotive vehicles, aircraft, and bicycles. Rubber is also used in electrical insulation, and because it is waterproof, it is a favored material for shoe soles.

RVP

Reid vapor pressure. A measure of the volatility of hydrocarbons. The Reid test can measure volatility at any practical temperature. A testing temperature must accompany any RVP report to make it most informative. Ordinarily, the feedstock and petroleum products trade uses RVP numbers measured at 100F.

Saponification Value

The saponification value is defined as the number of milligrams of potassium hydroxide required to saponify completely one gram of the substance. It is a measure of the free and combined fatty acids present. By deducting the acid value from the saponification value, we obtain the ester value representing only the combined fatty acids in the neutral oil. The mean molecular weight of the fat can be calculated from the saponification value. The amount of glycerine in the neutral oil can be calculated from the ester value. The saponification value is measured by saponifying a known weight of an oil or fat with an excess of an alcoholic solution of potassium hydroxide followed by titration of the remaining alcoholic alkali with standard acid.
