U.S. naval forces have seized the Iranian-flagged cargo vessel Touska in the Gulf of Oman, marking the first forcible interdiction since the blockade of Iranian shipping began on April 13.
The operation was carried out by the guided-missile destroyer USS Spruance, which intercepted the vessel as it transited toward Bandar Abbas at speed.
According to U.S. officials, the crew failed to respond to repeated warnings over a six-hour period. The destroyer then fired 5-inch naval gun rounds into the engine room, disabling the ship’s propulsion.
Following the strike, U.S. Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit boarded and secured the vessel without further incident.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that the Touska had been sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury for prior illicit activities, making it a target under the current enforcement campaign.
Iranian authorities condemned the seizure, calling it “armed piracy” and warning of potential retaliation.
The incident underscores the growing intensity of maritime enforcement operations in the region as tensions continue to escalate.
