Stolt-Nielsen Chemical Tanker Stolt Magnesium Attacked off Oman, Engine Room Fire Reported

The chemical tanker Stolt Magnesium, owned by Stolt Tankers and operated by Norwegian shipping company Stolt-Nielsen, was attacked in the Arabian Sea approximately 40 nautical miles northeast of Qalhat, Oman, in the early hours of July 14. An explosion from an unidentified device triggered a fire in the engine room. All crew members are confirmed safe.

The crew initiated firefighting operations independently following the blast. The nature of the device and the extent of damage to the vessel have not been fully confirmed. UKMTO reported an attack at a position consistent with the vessel's location.

The attack on Stolt Magnesium coincides with a broader escalation of maritime incidents in the region. Two ADNOC L&S tankers ( Mombasa B and Al Bahyah ) were struck by Iranian cruise missiles in the Strait of Hormuz on July 13, resulting in one Indian crew member killed and eight injured, with significant damage reported to both vessels.

Oil and gas prices have risen sharply in response to the escalation, with Brent crude trading at approximately $87 per barrel and European TTF gas prices up 4 percent on the day.

Investigation into the attack on Stolt Magnesium is ongoing. No group has claimed responsibility.
