A container ship sailing through the Strait of Hormuz has reported being struck by an unknown projectile, according to a UKMTO incident advisory.
The incident occurred about 2 nautical miles off the coast of Oman while the vessel was transiting eastbound. The projectile reportedly hit just above the waterline, causing a fire in the engine room. No environmental impact has been reported. The crew has abandoned the vessel and is reportedly safe.
AIS data from ShipAtlas indicates the Safeen Prestige was the only container vessel transmitting a position signal in the reported strike area at the time.
The 2013-built container feeder vessel, sailing under the Malta flag, has a deadweight of 23,425 tonnes, measures 175 meters in length, and has a summer draft of 10.9 meters.
Authorities are currently investigating the incident.
