Bulker Bobik Attacked Twice by Suspected Pirates in Bab el-Mandeb Strait

A bulk carrier transiting the Bab el-Mandeb Strait came under two separate pirate attacks early Friday morning, according to multiple maritime security sources and confirmation from the vessel’s manager, Century Shipmanagement. This was also confirmed by the security firm onboard the vessel. Diaplous Group.

The 32,000-dwt Bobik (built 2006) was sailing through the southern Red Sea when it was approached and chased by pirate skiffs on at least two occasions. Up to 15 small crafts in total. Armed guards onboard returned fire, successfully deterring the attackers and preventing the pirates from boarding.

Century Shipmanagement, based in Istanbul, later confirmed to TradeWinds that the Bobik had been attacked twice and that its security detail acted quickly to protect the vessel and crew.

Despite the attempted assaults, the company said the Bobik resumed normal operation under heightened security, with no injuries reported among the crew and no significant damage to the ship.

The 175 meters long drybulk vessel was on its way from Poti, Georgia where it was loaded and had a short stop in Istanbul before proceeding through the Suez Canal.

The two incidents are under investigation, and UKMTO advises all ships in the area to transit with causion, and report any suspicious activity.
