Three Dead, Two Missing After Rescue Boat Capsizes from South African Emergency Towing Vessel Umkhuseli

Three seafarers were killed and two remain missing after a fast rescue boat capsized on September 30 during an emergency recovery operation from the South African emergency towing vessel Umkhuseli, approximately 47 nautical miles south of Mossel Bay.

A crew member fell overboard while working on deck. Four colleagues immediately launched a fast rescue boat to recover him, but it capsized, placing all five people in the water. Three AMSOL employees were recovered and confirmed dead. Two others remain missing at time of reporting.

Umkhuseli is operated by AMSOL as an emergency towing and rapid response vessel under contract with South Africa's Department of Transport and the South African Maritime Safety Authority, and was on safety standby at the time of the incident.

A search and rescue operation was launched. Investigation into the circumstances of the capsize is ongoing.
