The Ghana Navy removed seven stowaways from the steering gear room of the Belgian-flagged tanker Cap Felix (158,765 DWT) on May 13, after the vessel (approximately 200 nautical miles off the coast) requested assistance. The stowaways were found concealed above the rudder in the vessel's steering gear compartment.
Cap Felix is operated by Bocimar and had departed Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. The Ghana Navy vessel Achimota was dispatched to intercept the tanker. All seven individuals removed were male. Authorities believe they may be Ivorian nationals residing in Ghana, though nationalities and how they boarded the vessel were still under investigation at time of reporting.
The seven individuals were handed over to the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, Ghana Immigration Service, and Marine Police for investigation and possible prosecution.
Investigation is ongoing.
