Largest Port in the US Breaks Own Record: First Time in 116 Years

In July 2024, the Port of Los Angeles handled a record-breaking 939,600 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units(TEUs), making it their busiest month in over two years. This marked the port’s best July in 116 years, with a 37% increase compared to 2023.

By seven months into 2024, the port is 18% ahead of its pace from the previous year. Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka addressed the media, offering insights into the reasons behind the increase.

“We’ve seen an influx of year-end holiday goods coming across our docks a bit earlier than usual to avoid any risk of delay later in the year,” says the executive director.

He explains that goods such as toys, electronics, and clothing are arriving alongside more typical back-to-school items, fall fashion, and Halloween merchandise.

“An early peak season has helped to boost volumes here in Los Angeles” concludes Seroka.

The Port of Los Angeles, the largest port in the US, operates 18 terminals with a total of 101 berths.
