Puntland Maritime Police Force Rescues Tanker Sibu 1 After 36 Days in Somali Pirate Captivity

The U.S.-sanctioned product tanker Sibu 1, hijacked in the Gulf of Aden on August 19, was rescued by the Puntland Maritime Police Force off the Somali coast on September 24–25. PMPF forces surrounded the vessel and the pirates surrendered. All crew members were reported safe.

Sibu 1 was held for 36 days, making it the second pirate-held vessel freed in September after the Lutuf on August 31. Three vessels (Honour 25, Eureka, and Asana) remain held by Somali pirates.
