Petrobras-Chartered AHTS Skandi Amazonas Intentionally Grounded off Macaé Beach After Hull Rupture

The AHTS vessel Skandi Amazonas, on charter to Petrobras, was intentionally grounded approximately 400 yards off the waterfront at Macaé, Brazil, on May 16 after striking a rock bank that ruptured the hull and caused flooding to the starboard engine room compartment. The vessel is currently resting approximately 80 nautical miles northeast of Rio de Janeiro.

The master elected to ground the vessel deliberately off Praia Campista to prevent sinking or capsizing. Water ingress disabled starboard propulsion; emergency generator power remains operational. Of the 29 people aboard, 12 were evacuated by passing vessels. The remaining 17 crew stayed aboard to conduct damage assessments and prepare for salvage operations. No injuries or pollution were reported.

Skandi Amazonas was built in 2010. The local port authority has opened an investigation and all parties are cooperating.
