Passenger Rescued After 20 Hours in Ionian Sea Following Overboard Incident from Odyssey of the Seas

A passenger went overboard from the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Odyssey of the Seas in the Ionian Sea on October 9 and was rescued approximately 20 hours later, conscious and with mild hypothermia.

The incident occurred at approximately 0600 local time while the vessel was sailing from Mykonos to Naples, approximately 72 nautical miles southwest of Zakynthos. The passenger, a 44-year-old woman from El Salvador, was found with a ship's life preserver. The Hellenic Coast Guard coordinated the search response, deploying patrol boats, a helicopter, and a Hellenic Air Force aircraft.

The containership MSC Rossella III, transiting from Piraeus to Gioia Tauro, located a flashing light attached to a lifering early on October 10 and alerted the Coast Guard. A patrol boat subsequently recovered the woman and transferred her to hospital ashore.

Odyssey of the Seas cancelled a scheduled Naples port call to assist in the search. The circumstances of the overboard incident remain under investigation.
