Norwegian Chemical Tanker Bergstraum Explosion and Fire off Fredrikstad

The Norwegian-registered chemical tanker Bergstraum (9,494 DWT) suffered an explosion and fire on July 28 while outside Fredrikstad, south of the entrance to the Oslofjord, carrying a cargo of sulfuric acid.

The explosion occurred at approximately 1533 local time in an empty tank and did not affect the main cargo, according to operator Utkilen. The crew brought the fire under control quickly using foam. Cooling operations were ongoing as of Tuesday evening with some residual smoke development. The vessel was awaiting permission to move into port.

All 15 crew members were accounted for without injuries. Multiple vessels and a helicopter responded, including Norwegian Coast Guard and Swedish rescue units.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation.
