MSC Hermes III abandoned off Vietnam

The 2,490-TEU containership MSC Hermes III was abandoned by its 25-person crew on September 22, approximately 160 nautical miles east of Vietnam. The crew evacuated into a lifeboat after issuing a distress call and were safely rescued by the larger MSC Ruby.

The vessel remained afloat but was later reported derelict and adrift. The circumstances that led to the abandonment and the cause of the incident remain unclear, while arrangements for salvage had not been confirmed.
