The Mexican Navy coastal patrol vessel Uxmal (PC-335) lost control while maneuvering in the port at Isla Mujeres on the afternoon of Thursday, June 18, striking the docked Ro-Ro ferry UltraCarga III. No injuries were reported, though both vessels sustained significant damage.
SEMAR México stated that Uxmal experienced a possible clutch system failure while approaching the pier of the Fifth Naval Region, resulting in unintentional contact with the ferry. Local newspaper Reforma reported the patrol boat was travelling at an estimated six knots when a malfunction in its computerized control system prevented the crew from steering or braking.
The bow of Uxmal struck the side of Ultra Carga III, which was docked at the time. Uxmal is a Tenochtitlan-class coastal patrol vessel, built in Mexico in 2015 using Dutch Damen Shipyards technology, measuring approximately 140 feet in length with a displacement of 239 tons. Ultra Carga III is a 300-metre Ro-Ro ferry operated by Ultramar Carga, running between the Mexican mainland and ports including Cozumel and Isla Mujeres, with a capacity of 400 passengers plus vehicle and freight cargo.
Mexico's Secretariat of the Navy confirmed it is conducting a technical evaluation of Uxmal and remains in coordination with port authorities.
