Kuwaiti Product Tanker Kaifan Struck in Strait of Hormuz, Crew Abandons Ship

The Kuwaiti product tanker Kaifan was struck by an unknown projectile approximately 8 nautical miles northeast of Limah, Oman, in the Strait of Hormuz at approximately 2010 UTC on Monday, July 21. The crew reported a drone or missile strike resulting in an engine room fire before abandoning ship.

Multiple third parties reported receiving a VHF Channel 16 distress call from the vessel. In an update early Tuesday, UKMTO confirmed the crew had abandoned ship and were adrift in a lifeboat awaiting rescue.

The attack follows a similar pattern to the strike on the LR1 tanker Kavomaleas over the weekend, which also suffered an engine room fire after being struck in the Strait of Hormuz.

No crew injuries have been confirmed at time of publication. Investigation is ongoing.
