Investigation of oil spill in Algoa Bay, South Africa
The South African Incident Management Organisation (IMOrg) has initiated an investigation into an oil spill in Algoa Bay, Sout Africa, which reportedly originated from MV MSC Apollo (IMO: 9247730) a container vessel anchored in the port of Coega. The spill, discovered Saturday afternoon, was identified after oil-like blobs and a sheen were spotted on the water.
Following initial investigation by the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) and the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA), the extent of the spill is still under assessment. A response plan is in place, involving multiple organizations such as SAMSA, SANPARKS, and SANCCOB to mitigate the environmental impact, particularly to the wildlife on nearby islands.
Efforts include aerial surveillance by helicopter and drones, sea patrols by boat, and foot patrols along the coastline. Cleanup activities are expected to begin once weather conditions improve. The public is urged to report any sightings of oiled birds or mammals.
