A fire broke out aboard the Indonesian passenger ferry Mutiara Sentosa 2 at approximately 0600 local time on August 2 while the vessel was transiting past Madura Island en route from Surabaya to Makassar, Sulawesi. Five people are confirmed dead and 41 remain missing. Over 220 people have been rescued.
The vessel had approximately 232 passengers and 39 crew on board at the time. The fire was not reported to rescue agency Basarnas until approximately one hour after it broke out. Multiple good Samaritan vessels responded to assist. Many of those missing are believed to have jumped overboard to escape the fire. Search efforts were concentrated on finding survivors in the water as of late Sunday.
Mutiara Sentosa 2 is a 1992-built passenger ferry of 3,800 DWT, operating domestic Indonesian routes since at least 2015. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
