Container Ships Maersk Chattogram and HR Turag Collide at Chattogram Port Anchorage

The container ships Maersk Chattogram and feeder vessel HR Turag collided at the outer anchorage of Chattogram Port, Bangladesh, at approximately 0930 local time on May 1 as both vessels were approaching the pilot station inbound from Singapore. No injuries were reported.

The collision caused a substantial penetration in the hull plating on the starboard quarter of Maersk Chattogram, with photographs showing significant structural damage to the affected area. Damage to HR Turag has not been publicly detailed.

Both vessels were carrying a combined cargo of approximately 2,800 TEUs of imported goods at the time of the collision. The ships remained at anchorage for two days before being brought to berth on May 3 under a controlled navigation corridor, with two pilots and three tugs assigned to each vessel during the berthing operation.

A joint investigation committee has been formed by Bangladesh's Shipping Department and the Chattogram Port Authority to determine the cause of the collision. No pollution was reported.
