The Liberian-flagged Panamax bulk carrier Minoan Dignity was struck by an unknown projectile in its engine room while transiting outbound through the Strait of Hormuz's southern corridor overnight on August 17–18. The vessel's chief engineer was killed - the first confirmed seafarer fatality from a Hormuz attack since the Mombasa B on July 14.
The remaining crew were being assisted by the Omani Coast Guard following two unsuccessful helicopter evacuation attempts. The IMO confirmed 66 total incidents in the strait as of August 19.
INTERCARGO issued a statement calling the killing "unacceptable," emphasising that seafarers are civilians. Hours after the attack, President Trump posted on Truth Social: "The Hormuz Strait is open and operating. All water mines have been removed or detonated."
