Bulk Carrier Nord Houston Catches Fire at Newport Docks While Carrying Scrap Metal Cargo

A fire broke out aboard the bulk carrier Nord Houston at approximately 05:38 BST on April 26 while the vessel was docked at Newport Docks, Wales, carrying approximately 1,000 tonnes of scrap metal cargo.

Five pumping appliances, two hydraulic aerial platforms, and specialist units were deployed to the scene. Fire service boats supported water safety operations. The fire was brought under control during the day, with crews remaining on scene to monitor for reignition.

No injuries were reported and no immediate risk to surrounding properties was identified. An environmental impact assessment is ongoing in coordination with Natural Resources Wales and Associated British Ports.

The cause of the fire has not been confirmed. The extent of damage to the vessel and cargo has not been publicly disclosed.
