Borr Drilling Jack-Up Prospector 5 Sinks off Gabon After Punch-Through Event, One Dead, Four Missing

The jack-up drilling rig Prospector 5, operated by Borr Drilling, sank at approximately 2037 local time on October 24 while conducting jacking operations offshore Gabon in preparation for a drilling campaign at BW Energy's Dussafu licence. The rig had not yet commenced drilling operations.

Of 115 personnel on board, 110 were safely accounted for. One Indian national among the five initially missing was subsequently found dead. Four crew members remain missing, including three Gabonese nationals and one other expatriate.

Borr Drilling stated that preliminary information indicates the rig experienced a punch-through event during preload activities, causing loss of stability and the subsequent sinking. A punch-through occurs when a jack-up leg penetrates the seabed unexpectedly and rapidly, a known hazard in soft or layered soil conditions that can cause catastrophic loss of stability within seconds.

Investigation into the cause of the punch-through is ongoing.
