Allied Naval Forces Gather in Bergen for Arctic Dolphin 2025

If you're walking around Bergen Harbor these days, you might spot an unusual sight among the typical ships. Four days ago, the Dutch support vessel HNLMS Mercuur (IMO: 4601761) docked alongside a submarine as part of the military exercise 'Arctic Dolphin 2025.'

'Arctic Dolphin 2025' is an annual exercise that began on February 3. Over 12 days, Norwegian and allied forces will train in anti-submarine warfare and submarine command training in a challenging winter environment, according to the Norwegian Armed Forces.

The exercise will conclude on February 14.

The purpose of the exercise is to provide critical training for both submarine crews and future submarine commanders. Additionally, it aims to strengthen allied cooperation in the North Atlantic. Allied vessels will be visible in Bergen from January 31 before heading to the training area covering Sognesjøen, Bjørnafjorden, and Sognefjorden.

"Submarine capabilities are among Norway's most important assets, and exercises like Arctic Dolphin ensure that our crews gain the necessary experience to operate effectively—both alone and alongside allies. Training in demanding winter conditions along the Norwegian coast enhances our operational readiness and role within NATO," says Commander Jim Robertsen, head of the Norwegian Submarine Service.

Strengthening Allied Cooperation

The exercise takes place as Norway and Germany work together to procure twelve new submarines, making allied training even more crucial.

"Collaboration with Germany is central, but Arctic Dolphin is primarily about further developing cooperation with our closest allies. The fact that our allies send vessels, submarines, and air assets here to train with us demonstrates how important they considerNorway and the North Atlantic as an operational area," explains Robertsen.

Arctic Dolphin 2025 aims to provide realistic training in submarine operations and strengthen operational capabilities across allied forces. The exercise ensures that Norway and its partners are prepared to operate together in both Norwegian and international missions.
